Tomorrow - March 20th - is the International Day of Happiness, and with all the happiness I've acquired and built for myself over the last few years, there's no way I could let this day pass by without writing a post about it. As someone who once thought life was awful, unbearable, and not worth living, but is now head over heels in love with living and is so grateful to wake up every day, happiness and positivity is something that I love talking about because I know it is achievable.

This post is all about perspective, and how a simple change to the way you think can drastically affect how you feel about life and the world around you. Sometimes it really is the littlest things that can create the biggest changes, so here a few simple ways to try and turn a negative situation around ✨


No one is immune to the woes that can come with working, but changing your mindset and how you look at things can drastically affect your time at work. It's important to remember how great it is to be able to work. It allows you to get out of the house, do something, and earn money so that you can do things like have electricity and eat food. 

It's things like that, that seem so common to many of us, that we take for granted. As I have mentioned before, it is a privilege just to have a job. So many people would love to be in your position, so enjoy it while you have it - after all, we never know what tomorrow could bring, or take away from us.


First up, some humility so you don't all think I am a bubbly, laughing person 24/7: Nothing gets to me more than when something I've planned doesn't work out. I set such high expectations for myself, and I am torn apart when they don't come out the way I hoped - but I'm working on it. I am trying to train myself to think of the good parts of these situations. 

For example, it teaches me to think on my feet. Depending on what has gone wrong, I am often able to salvage the product by changing something last minute, which helps me become more resourceful. It also teaches me that there's often a much simpler way to do things, and that I don't have to push myself so far every time. If those things don't make me feel better, at the very least I am still getting some practice in and am (very) slowly learning to be more patient with myself.



Everybody has to deal with this at some point in their life. Even though I have cut off every toxic friend and family member that I once had, I still have to deal with people online, at work, and just in every day life, so there is bound to be a few people who snap at me, say something rude, or are just so bitter that it drags even me down. 

Once again, learning to deal with this situation is all about perspective. The most common thing people say is to put yourself in their shoes because you never know what they could be growing through, and there's a very good chance that their attitude towards you has nothing to do with you at all - but it's hard to feel sorry for people who are treating you badly. 

Instead, I think about how grateful I am that I'm not them. I am so glad that I don't let petty things like jealousy affect how I treat people, and that's really humbling to think. I do my very best to be a good person and treat everyone with respect, and they certainly can't say that. I know that I have a good heart, and that's all that matters at the end of the day.


These very simple things have made me a much happier person in my day-to-day life, and have encouraged me to appreciate each day for what it is. I still have a long way to go in my journey to happiness - as cliche as that may sound - but I am still so proud and amazed by how far I've come already. Life is good, and we are so lucky to be alive at this point in time, so don't let a single day pass you by without remembering that πŸ’•

They say loose lips sink ships, but what about jelly ones? 😜

As I mentioned in Monday's post, Daniel has been helping me out in the kitchen, and it's been really fun to be able to share another part of my life with him. I had actually planned to make lips shaped Rice Krispies treats for Lips Appreciation Day as I had so much fun making my last Rice Krispie treat, but it didn't work out how I had planned.

After I scrapped that idea, Daniel said that I should try out a brand new recipe instead. He did some brainstorming and stumbled across this jelly slice recipe and we decided to give it a go. Daniel loves jelly, and it didn't involve any baking so it seemed like a good way to ease into new recipes without jumping straight into the deep end.

Whilst jelly slice itself certainly isn't ground-breaking - every recipe we found for it was essentially the same - I absolutely love how the deep red jelly looks like red lipstick, which is definitely my favourite colour for lipstick (although I also have quite the fondness for orange and pink too - what can I say, I love my colours!). To turn your jelly slice into these luscious lips, wait until all your layers have set completely, then grease a lips shaped cookie cutter with butter before carefully pressing it into your jelly slice, then slide the cutter off by gently pressing on the jelly. Easy! 

This was not only my first time making jelly slice, but it was my first time eating it too, and it was delicious! Whilst there's a bit of waiting around involved, this certainly isn't a difficult recipe at all, and I think it would be quite a nice treat to serve at parties. Plus, if you're like me and have quite the extensive cookie cutter collection, then you can make it fit in with any kind of theme you may have going on!

For those wondering what exactly Lips Appreciation Day is, truth is, I don't really know either. As far as I can tell, the people behind Party Excuses made it up, and I'm certainly not mad about it - after all, I am the Queen of Novelty Holidays! πŸ˜œ 


I know this post isn't as unique as my sushi roll cake pops or my letter board sugar cookies, but I really believe this is the start of a new era here on The Small Adventurer. Whilst I am sure my cookie posts won't disappear for long as I do love to make and decorate them, I am hoping that I will continue to branch out and try new things, whilst still putting a Small Adventurer-twist to them!

I know all my Australian readers and fellow bloggers are going to look at this title and frown, thinking: Indya, you know we just entered Autumn, right? It's nowhere near Spring. Yes, don't worry, I'm aware of what hemisphere I'm in, but I decided to write this post for two reasons. The first one being that most of my readers are actually from America (hey guys!) and other places in the Northern Hemisphere, but I also decided to write it because I think any time is a good time for a Spring clean!

Every few months I will change things up around our house. I'll do a declutter, I'll add or take away a piece of furniture, or I'll change the way I organise something in hopes to make life even smoother for us. Doing these things always leaves me feeling refreshed and motivated. After all, we are all ever-changing, so our surroundings should be too, including our blogs!

We are not the same people we were a few months ago, and your blog should always reflect that. There's nothing wrong with growth, in fact I think it will only help you. The more real you are on your blog, the more people will relate to you and trust you. So, next time you feel like you've entered a new stage in your life and you need to change some things around, here are a few blog-related things that you should consider!


I honestly think this is one of the best decisions ever, and I am (very, very) slowly in the process of doing it myself. When I started this blog back in August 2016, I took awful photos, the layout of my posts was different, and I didn't really know what I wanted to do with The Small Adventurer just yet, so everything was all over the place. Whilst I have gone back and deleted some of my old posts that I felt really didn't add anything to the world, I generally believe it's best to just go back and edit your old posts.

Upload better photos, improve your vocabulary, link to newer posts that may be related to the same topic. You never know what post of yours someone might stumble across one day, so you want to make sure that, no matter what post it is, the reader will be instantly intrigued about you and your blog and want to read more. If they find an old post with grainy photos and outdated information, they are going to exit that tab and move on, which is not what we want!


Whilst I mention this in the point above, it's not just old blog posts that could use new photos. Perhaps your about page, sidebar, or even your gallery page if you have one could use some newer photos. Especially if you've been blogging for some time, you don't want your readers to become acquainted with an old, outdated photo of you or it might confuse them. Plus, this gives you an excuse to dress up and take some fun photos of yourself if you want to!



Once again, you are ever-changing, so the information you give people about yourself needs to be ever-changing as well. I edited my about page many times before I realised what was needed and what wasn't. I used to list things about myself that had nothing to do with this blog, which really isn't going to help anyone. 

Whilst it's fine to put in quick and quirky facts about yourself here and there (my about page features my Subway order, for example), including things like "you can find my head stuck into a book 24/7" is a little pointless if you don't talk about books or reading on your blog. This is just my personal opinion, but I would expect most things that are mentioned in your about page - especially ones that you claim to love so much - to make at least some appearances within your blog content. Otherwise, it's just unnecessary.


I have heard that there's plug-ins that do this for you, but I am pretty sure they're not available on Blogger (if I am wrong, please let me know! I'd love to be use one), so this task could be quite a tedious one, which is why I prioritise my link-checking. I make sure that all the links on my blog's home page - and any pages that those links link to - are correct and working. I also like to double-check any posts that get a particularly high amount of traffic have all correct links; these are also the posts you want to go back and add links to newer posts to as well, to drive the traffic to your newer content.

I know how annoying it is when I find a great blog and/or post, and the links are broken, or lead to a site that doesn't exist anymore. If this happens too often I will simply leave that page and find a new one, as will anyone else who stumbles across a page with broken links. Even if your information is really interesting and helpful, your links are still extremely important!


I did this quite a bit last year. I got rid of blog post series that weren't as popular as others, that weren't as fun to write anymore, or that I knew I was writing for all the wrong reasons. For example, I used to write a weekly post about the things I bought at a thrift store. It was fun to research each item and find out what I saved by buying it second hand, but it made me spend money every single week on things that I didn't really need, so I scrapped it. I also used to set monthly goals, but I fell into a routine of setting really easy goals and not challenging myself, simply because I knew how easy those posts were to write. That's not the kind of person I wanted to be, so good-bye monthly goals!

Around this time, I also realised how passionate I was about baking and creating. It gave me an entire newfound drive and love for life, so I knew I had to do more of it, and I knew I had to share those adventures on here. Now, I would say I am mostly a baking and DIY blog (still a little short on the DIY content, but I'm getting there!), and it feels great to have those topics in mind to work on and brainstorm content for. When I realised that I didn't have to cover every single topic in the world, my overall plan for my blog became a whole lot clearer, which enabled me to learn more about myself as well.


There you go, five simple ways to give your blog a subtle makeover and ensure that it is always refreshed and relevant to you and how you live your life. After all, you are the brains and heart behind your blog, and that should be reflected in every aspect of it. Don't be afraid to let it grow and change as you do!

I am just realising that Easter is fifteen days earlier than it was last year. That seems insane! I know it's got to do with the full moon and whatnot, but it's still strange to me. Imagine starting a new year and not knowing what date Christmas was going to fall on, it would drive me crazy!

Anyway, this slice is kind of groundbreaking for me - as will be Friday's recipe - since Daniel has been doing his best to get me out of my shell (hey, that's almost an Easter pun...) and try new things in the kitchen. 

We've been watching Zumbo's Just Desserts and it's really inspired him to help me branch out for my usual cupcakes and cookies because I am the Queen of resting your laurels and would do it for the rest of my life if I could - but, I have to say, I am loving the results so far!

We've started off with two different slice recipes, as they are something different to me, but still aren't too difficult right off the bat. Friday's recipe is actually the first one we tried, and this hedgehog slice is the second. Neither one of us had ever made hedgehog slice before, but I really think we nailed it! I honestly cannot stop eating it, it's so good. 

We changed it up a bit from the regular, everyone-and-their-mum-has-made recipe by using milk chocolate instead of dark, and scrapping the walnuts, but other than that it's the good old hedgehog slice that everyone reading this has most certainly had at some point in their lives! Now, I'll stop chewing off your ear and get onto the recipe!

( This recipe actually makes six of the squares pictured - I just like doing things in threes! πŸ˜…)

You'll Need:
♡ 200g plain biscuits, chopped coarseley
♡ 1/2 tsp vegetable oil
♡ 1 egg

♡ 150g chocolate (I used cooking chocolate so it would melt easier)
♡ 1/3 cup cocoa powder
♡ 1/2 cup dessicated coconut
♡ 250g butter
♡ 1 + 1/4 cup caster sugar

1. Grease or line your tray with baking paper or butter. Most recipes usually call for a 20 x 30 tray, but you can go for bigger or smaller depending on how thick you would like your slice to be!

2. Melt butter in 30 second increments in the microwave, then quickly stir sugar and cocoa in until melted and incorporated.

3. Whisk in the egg, then add biscuits and coconut. Mix until combined. Pour into prepared pan and spread evenly. Refrigerate overnight.

4. Melt chocolate in microwave or on the stove, then pour evenly on top of your slice. Place back in fridge until set.

You'll Need:
♡ Buttercream icing
♡ Green gel food dye
Piping bag
Grass piping tip
♡ Blue and green sprinkles (optional)


1. Colour your buttercream with the food dye until you get your desired colour. Pour icing into piping bag fitted with the grass piping tip.

2. Once the top layer of chocolate on your hedgehog slice has set and cooled, cut it into slices and start piping the grass by squeezing the piping bag as close to the slice as possible for a few seconds, before lifting it up and slowly releasing the pressure on the bag. Holding it in place for those few seconds creates a foundation for the "blades" of grass to sit in, rather than just having the brown slice underneath.

3. Continue step two all over the hedgehog slices, making sure that each new patch of icing you do is as close to the one before as possible to eliminate any spots of brown in between, but also being cautious that the piping tip doesn't squish any of the previous icing you added.

4. Once all your slices are covered in your green icing, decorate with speckled eggs, chocolate bunnies (which I show you how to make below), and sprinkles if you'd like!



You'll Need:
♡ White and milk chocolate melts
♡ Plastic bunny mould (I used these ones)

1. Melt chocolate in 30 second increments in the microwave, then pour into desired mould.

2. Place in fridge until set, then carefully pop out the chocolate and break off any excess pieces. Repeat this process until you have as many chocolate bunnies as you desire, then carefully place them onto your Easter scene hedgehog slices!

This is really quite a simple dessert for such an awesome result, but it's still not something I would have bothered to try if it weren't for Daniel. I can't wait for you guys to see Friday's post; it was 100% Daniel's idea and it is awesome. I couldn't be more thankful to have him in my life to help me try new things and realise my own potential.

I'll explain more in the actual post, but Daniel helping me out in the kitchen came about because a recipe I tried didn't work out, so he suggested a slice recipe, and now we try out new baking adventures every weekend together. We're hoping to attempt mini pies soon; it will be our first attempt at making pastry so that should be interesting πŸ˜‚

One thing that I honestly never think I'll run out of is inspiration. I am inspired by the entire world; everything around me encourages me to try harder to be a better version of myself, and I feel really blessed to be able to see the world that way. I love that I always focus on the smaller parts of life that so many others often miss, as I truly think the key to happiness is within those smaller, quieter moments of life that are ignored far too much.

Everyone has their own muses and sources of inspiration. Everyone has a different story to tell and different dreams to strive towards, so listing the things that inspire me might not have much effect on people - but they also might. These things might help others take another look at the things that are surrounding them, and realise how much inspiration is already there. 

If nothing else, this post might help a future me who has lost her way and forgot what used to drive her to spend every day creating something new. Hopefully that never happens, but at least I'll have this post to come back to if it does!


My biggest idols and inspirations in life are fellow bloggers, particularly Studio DIY and Aww Sam. I honestly can't talk about these ladies enough, I really do admire everything they do! I've been following their blogs and Instagram Stories for so long now it feels like I know them in real life. Even Daniel knows them - and their partners - by their first names now!

Fangirl-ing aside, these two incredibly ladies have taught me so much about life and blogging. They've taught me that you can make a name for yourself just by being yourself, and that you can never have too much colour! They both make a living creating things and bringing happiness into other people's lives, and it's so encouraging to see their dreams come true thanks to all their hard work. 

In fact, they really made me fall in love with actually putting in the work and striving towards your goals, because nobody owes you anything in life, so if you want something, you've got to go after it!


Without giving you an entire sob story, I have had a less-than-perfect life, to say the least. Throughout high school I was so caught up in a horrible home life and an abusive relationship that I wasted all my potential to grow and achieve great things throughout those years. 

It honestly breaks my heart to think of all the opportunities and personal growth that I missed out on over that time, but it also motivates me not to waste any more time. I am still super young in the grand scheme of things, and there's no reason why I can't start all the things I always wanted to now. After all, 2018 the year I flourish into the person I have always wanted to be!


Daniel is the best thing to ever happen to me. He is my best friend in the whole world, and nobody thinks higher of me than he does. He is always encouraging me to go that little bit further. When I share a small idea with him, he instantly has an idea on how to make it even bigger and better. He takes me out of my comfort zone and prevents me from always doing things the easy way, and I really need that.

If I didn't have him, I wouldn't have grown at all over the last four and a half years. I wouldn't have had the courage to move out and cut ties with a toxic family member, I wouldn't have bothered to go back to school, I wouldn't have even started this blog! He is my backbone and the most amazing person ever. I'm never letting him go!



There you have it, the three things that inspire and motivate me most in life. I honestly don't know where I would be - or who I would be - without these things, especially Daniel. Actually, if it wasn't for Daniel, I would still be who I was in the past, not living up to my full potential and letting time pass me by, but no more! 

I've already grown so much since meeting Daniel, and I know I'm only going to continue to grow as time goes on. Remember: you can't control what happens to you in life, but you can control how you react to it! Don't let this life slip through your fingers ✨

Cupcake toppers are my new favourite thing to make! I have a box filled with different foam shapes and they are perfect for these kind of projects. I recently ordered some heart shaped ones, so if you have any heart-shaped cake topper ideas let me know and I'll do my best to make them!

As you'll probably be able to tell, I made mini cupcakes for this recipe, and used mini foam balls as the toppers, but you could totally use regular sized cupcakes - or even a whole cake, and have a complete set of billiard balls on top! I so should have done that πŸ˜… Anyway, let's get onto the tutorial!

♡ Mini cupcakes, iced the same colours as billiard balls
Mini foam balls
Paint in the same colours as billiard balls (as I only did 1, 2 and 3, I only needed dark blue, yellow, and orange), plus white
♡ Black fineliner pen
Wooden toothpicks
♡ Something to stick the toothpicks into, such as a foam board
♡ Small circle stencil (optional)

1. If you're using a stencil (which I did), paint a white circle at the middle front of each billiard ball. Since the foam ball is already white you can skip this step, but it did get rid of the lines on the ball, plus it gives you a better idea of where not to paint the colour.

2. After you paint each white circle, stick a toothpick into the bottom of your ball, then stick that into your foam board. Continue doing this with the rest of your foam balls until they each have a white circle painted on them.

3. Once your white paint has dried, paint outside those circles the colours you have chosen for your billiard balls. 

Keep your foam balls toothpick-ed to the foam board while you do this to avoid having to touch the wet paint. Do any second layers that you think are necessary, then set aside to dry completely.

4. Now it's time to write the numbers in the middle of the circles. Two things to remember when doing this: first, make sure your white paint is 100% dry. Second, work quickly with the fineliner as it tends to eat away at the foam the longer you leave the tip touching the foam. I ended up going over my numbers a few times to make the lines thicker, which you may want to do as well, just remember not to hold it in the same place for too long!

5. When all your paint has dried completely, carefully pick up your foam balls and stick them into the corresponding cupcakes, and you're done! These would be my go-to snack if we had a pool table and could invite people over for games, but I also think they're just super cute as is πŸ˜‹

Do any of you play pool? I've never had a huge interest in it, but ever since I saw a pink pool table online somewhere, I've been dying to get one. I'll take anything that's pink πŸ˜‚

First off, I was just want to make it clear that this is not a post on how to get really popular on Instagram, nor is it about how I got thousands of followers or anything (because, as you can clearly see, I don't). These days it seems like the only way to increase your follower count on Instagram is to either buy them, or delve into the follow/unfollow game - two things that I am not about.

I improved my Instagram by not focusing on numbers, and instead tried to remember why I fell in love with Instagram in the first place - which was because it enabled me to share snippets of my life that I wanted to remember. It was about the moments I was overcome with feelings and just had to take a photo and post it, right then and there.

Now, I put a lot more time and effort into my photos, and I am okay with that. I like doing that because it appeals to my creative side, but for a while there I did focus far too much time on analysing what photos would generate the best response. In a way, I am sort of glad that Instagram has completely fallen apart, as it has made a lot of people forget about their numbers and go back to posting what they want - because it doesn't really matter anymore, since no one sees your posts anyway πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜…

So when I say I "improved my Instagram", I don't mean I became really popular, I mean that I created a feed that made me happy, and was still pleasing to look at. I improved my overall experience of Instagram, because now I can look at my feed and know that it's an accurate representation of the things I fill my life with, and the things that make my heart happy. So here are the ways that I improved my Instagram:


Whilst I will still upload photos from my phone every now and then because you can't always plan what moments you're going to want to share (such as a quick lunch date, or a pretty view), I really enjoy using my camera as it makes me take more time with the photos I'm taking, and encourages me to try out different angles and takes on things. 

I also find that the photos I take on my camera look so much better when you're browsing Instagram on your computer, just look at the first photo I linked above compared to 99% of my other photos! I also started using Dropbox to send the photos from my camera to my phone as it keeps the qualities of the photos pretty well. I used to just send the photos to my phone via messenger on Facebook and it would ruin the photos, so I'm really glad I found another way to do it!



Okay, these are still pretty new to me, but I can already tell what a great improvement they're going to make. Our house has awful lighting, so once the natural lighting is gone by mid-afternoon, taking a nice photo used to be impossible - until I bought these soft boxes! I am still yet to play around with their positioning to see how it affects the shadows and whatnot, but the fact that I can have decent lighting at any time of the day now makes them worth the investment 100%. I cannot recommend them enough!


Preview is a complete free app that lets you upload photos to see how they will look within your feed. You can upload as many photos as you want if you'd like to plan out your photos for the next week or even month, and you can move them around as much as you'd like as well! 

I absolutely love it, and it has stopped me from constantly deleting photos because I didn't like how they looked in my feed. Even though I like my Instagram to reflect all parts of me life and be as genuinely "me" as possible, I still like to have a cohesive feed, and this app helps with that so, so much!


I feel like I'm breaking one of the top blogger rules by saying this, but it was definitely the right choice for me. So often I would post a photo just because I felt like I had to, and I would end up hating it and how it sat within my feed, and would end up deleting it the next day. 

If the Instagram algorithm ever goes back to normal, I would probably try to go back to posting every day as much as I could, but since it doesn't guarantee that your posts are going to show up in people's feeds anymore than posting once a week is, I am not going to bother with it. Now I just post when I have something that I think is worth posting, and it's been really nice not to have to worry about being so consistent!

There you have it, how I improved my Instagram and made myself fall in love with the app again. In these dark days of not knowing who is going to see your posts, I think it's important to make sure that you genuinely like your posts, and go from there. If you don't enjoy your own content then something is definitely wrong. Remember that you should be creating for yourself first, and everyone else second!

First up, a confession: I always thought it was spelt S-U-E-S-S until I wrote this post. Whoops! I swear I've read Dr. Seuss books - quite a few of them, in fact - but I guess I never needed to write his name until now. Ah well, at least now I know!

Anyway, on this day - March 2nd - in 1904, Dr. Seuss was born. He would eventually go on to become one of the most famous children's authors of all time; he was already dead by the time I was born, yet his books filled my childhood so much that it was like he was an old friend. With such success, of course I had to do something to celebrate his life on his birthday, and you all know how much I love baking cookies.

I had originally planned to dye the cookies red as I have some really good red food dye (which is hard to find!), but I used regular sugar instead of caster sugar and when they came out of the oven they looked like they were deathly sick, they were just so spotty! πŸ˜… 

I didn't want to go through the process of colouring the dough a second time as it is such a tedious process, so I decided to just use red fondant instead. I am quite pleased with the result, they are much more vibrant and gorgeous than I would have ever got the cookies on their own to be! Enough chitchat, onto the recipe!

1. Roll your fondant out onto some baking paper and cut it into the same shape as your cookies. Real talk: My cookies actually shrunk when I baked them, so my fondant circles ended up being too big for them. I tried to trim the edges and smooth them down as best as I could, but as you can easily see, they're still not quite circles.. πŸ˜…

2. Pick up the baking paper and flip it upside down so the fondant falls onto the cookie. I prefer doing it this way instead of picking it up with my hands as I find that that ruins the shape of the fondant! Continue doing this until all the cookies are covered in fondant.

3. Now, it's time to get stamping! Using your biscuit stamps, stamp your favourite quotes from Dr. Seuss books into your cookies. I tried to stick with smaller ones so I didn't have to worry too much about spacing, but he has some great longer ones if you're willing to use those ones. You can always spread them out across various cookies like I did!

I chose some short, uplifting quotes that I think everyone can benefit from at some point in their lives, but there are so many more that you could choose from. The possibilities are endless!
